On a daily basis the staff at Davey Law Limited need reliable and immediate access to a range of IT applications and documents in order to service the needs of their clients. These programmes and files need to be easily accessible from the office but also from remote locations including client offices or residences and court.

David Bush, Business and Compliance Manager at Davey Law outlines the business drivers behind finding an IT support partner. “Before engaging with SDT Limited I suppose you could say that our IT setup was similar to that of any traditional small to medium sized organisation. All of our infrastructure was hosted on site, all our PCs were individually managed and our telephony was supplied through BT leased lines. After a merger that formed the fi rm we have today, we decided to review our IT infrastructure. With more systems and staff in place we realised that IT support could be a potential issue.”

The Solution

SDT had already been working with Davey Law for a number of years, prior to its merger in 2004. Shortly after the new firm was formed, SDT’s sister organisation, Hosts Unlimited, was approached to provide a hosted solution for Davey Law’s IT infrastructure. “When the time came to upgrade our existing servers we evaluated the merits of moving to the cloud versus the capital expenditure of new hardware and the associated installation fees. Knowing that SDT would continue to provide support for the new hosted solution provided, gave us the confidence to take a leap into the cloud,” said David Bush.

SDT provides Davey Law with a comprehensive helpdesk service so staff can quickly address any IT issues that they are facing wherever they are working. Once an incident has been logged and a ticket has been raised with SDTs incident logging system, an email alert is circulated to the engineers responsible. In turn, Davey Law is notified of the ticket status through the lifecycle of the incident until completion.

“As well as providing helpdesk support to Davey Law, our dedicated team of highly accredited engineers also provide proactive support to prevent IT downtime,” explains Andrew Wayman, Managing Director at SDT Limited.

“Regardless of the level of support that we are required to provide, we make it our business to ensure that we understand our client’s business and how information technology can empower their workforce to meet business objectives and gain a competitive advantage.

Proactive monitoring of Davey Law’s IT network enables SDT to flag any potential issues before they occur, preventing potential downtime. Typically, this includes alerts for virus detection, low disk space, email server problems, backup failures, operating system problems and even website availability.

After working with Davey Law for a number of years, SDT recommended a Voice over IP telephony solution to the company. “Like any professional services firm, our legal advisers make a lot of phone calls during the course of a day,” commented David Bush.

“Once we knew that VoIP had evolved to a useable business standard we once again turned to SDT to discuss the potential benefits of migrating to an IP telephony solution.”

As well as offering per second billing to dramatically reduce call costs, VoIP can also improve productivity by combining and simplifying communications tools. The system can be easily expanded to add new users and allows staff to make calls from the office, from home or other locations around the world and take advantage of features like voicemail and call forwarding without having to pay extra. Companies can also achieve complete integration with existing databases and applications to provide enhanced customer service and improve efficiency.

The Results

“During our partnership with SDT we have implemented a number of technologies that have enabled our staff to provide a high level of service to our clients. Although SDT and Hosts Unlimited are separate companies, Andrew works hard with his team to ensure that there is continuity for our business across all the services that they provide,” said David Bush.
